Holding a retirement visa allows you to reside in Thailand legally for extended periods, but it is important to note that employment of any kind is strictly prohibited under this visa category.
Retirement Visa Types
Non-Immigrant O Retirement Visa (90 Days, Extendable Annually)
The Non-Immigrant B Visa is the standard visa required for foreigners intending to work or conduct business in Thailand.
- Initially valid for 90 days
- Can be extended annually for long-term stay (potential total of 15 months from initial issue)
- Eligible applicants can add a Multiple Re-entry Permit to freely leave and re-enter Thailand during the validity period
- Can often be processed at Bangkok Immigration (Chaeng Wattana) for those already in the country
- Processing times may vary at provincial offices — some require up to 2 weeks and additional waiting periods before an extension
Eligibility & Key Requirements:
- Applicant must be at least 50 years old on the date of application
- Must not be barred from entering Thailand under the Immigration Act
- Proof of financial means:
- At least 800,000 THB in a Thai bank account, or
- Monthly pension of at least 65,000 THB, or
- Combination of bank balance and income totalling at least 800,000 THB
- Proof of accommodation in Bangkok (rental agreement and TM30 receipt)
Note: Applicants applying through a Thai embassy/consulate or via e-visa may also be asked to provide health insurance, a police clearance, and other supporting documents — these are generally not required for applications made at Bangkok Immigration.
Non-Immigrant O-A Retirement Visa (1 Year)
- Must be obtained from a Thai Embassy/Consulate abroad or via e-visa
- Grants a full year’s stay from date of entry
- Requires annual health insurance coverage maintained throughout the visa validity period
Eligibility & Key Requirements:
- Minimum age of 50 years at application date
- Must be a citizen or legal resident of the country where the application is submitted
- Health insurance covering at least 3,000,000 THB (100,000 USD) annually, including COVID-19
- Criminal record clearance (valid within 3 months)
- Medical certificate confirming absence of prohibited diseases
- Proof of funds: 800,000 THB in a Thai bank account, or monthly pension of at least 65,000 THB, or combination totalling at least 800,000 THB
- Travel itinerary and confirmed accommodation arrangements
Non-Immigrant O-X Retirement Visa (5 Years, Renewable to 10 Years)
- Grants 5 years’ stay per issuance, renewable once for a total of 10 years
- Available only to passport holders of specific eligible countries (e.g., Australia, UK, USA, Japan, Germany, Canada, etc.)
- Must be applied for through a Thai Embassy/Consulate abroad
Eligibility & Key Requirements:
- Minimum age of 50 years
- Health insurance covering 3,000,000 THB (100,000 USD) annually, including COVID-19
- Criminal record clearance (within 3 months)
- Medical certificate confirming absence of prohibited diseases
- Proof of funds:
- At least 3 million THB in a Thai bank account, or
- 1.8 million THB in a Thai bank account plus annual income of at least 1.2 million THB
- Funds must be maintained for at least 1 year after arrival, with a minimum balance requirement thereafter
- Confirmed travel and accommodation bookings
